His Holiness, Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, was born in the year 1815 at a small village called Sri Bhaini Sahib, which is located around twenty five kilometers from Ludhiana (Punjab). At Raiyaan, a location in the village, Mata Sada Kaur was on the process of delivering a child- what came out from her womb was a masht(a sack/bag) which was filled with blood and water. Since the people there used to live simple lives similar to Brahmins, they buried that masht into the ground right in the delivery room itself, as all the houses then used to be raw and not furnished. After the delivery, since it was a custom that the mother should take a bath after delivery to cleanse herself, Mata Sada Kaur did the same. To her surprise, as she returned she saw an infant lying on the bed. This is how Mata Ji was blessed with a child who we know as our 12th Patshah Ji, SRI SATGURU RAM SINGH JI.
Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji was brought up in an environment where his mother used to sing to him the verses from the Holy Granth, and also narrated to him the lives and adventures of the other Gurus and epic heroes. Satguru Ji also learnt Gurmukhi from his mother at Sri Bhaini Sahib itself and also remembered and recited many parts from the ‘Gurbani’. His Holiness, also helped his father, Sardar Jassa Singh from a very young age itself. Sardar Jassa Singh, was a carpenter by profession and Matharoo by cast. Satguru Ji’s life was so involved in religious activities right from the beginning, a very good example would be the fact that when the young boys of the village used to spend their time singing folk songs, Satguru Ji would always praise the lord singing the holy verses from the Gurbani and whenever he used to do so, eventually with time, many villagers in that area used to find this very interesting and would happily join His Holiness in praising the Almighty.
Sri Satguru Ji, worked in the army for several years under Kanwar Naunihal Singh (grandson of maharaja Ranjit Singh). While serving in the army, Satguru Ram Singh Ji came across Satguru Balak Singh Ji and that was when the Gurgaddi (spiritual throne) was passed onto Satguru Ram Singh Ji and he became our baarvi(12th) Patshah Ji.
Satguru Ji, meditated on the naam for around twenty years mainly in Sri Bhaini Sahib at the place we know as the “Akaal Boonga”, and then He gradually started giving the Gurumantar to various people and preached about being a Namdhari Sikh. He also created 22 subas(heads) to go to different provincial areas to preach about God and about the Namdhari religion. Eventually, the people started having faith in what Sri Satguru Ji preached and many of them came to live with Sri Satguru Ji.
His Holiness was the one who made each and every effort to give women an equal stand to men in the society as during those times, female children were brutally abused and killed. Some were also treated as products and led to prostitution. Sri Satguru Ji also insisted that both boys and girls should be educated. Many hindrances to marriage were present. The involvement of dowry, caste system, endless processions and rituals can be named as a few. Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji first started the intercaste mass marriage system, to eradicate these issues.
Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji was the pioneer and first in world history who used Non Co-operation as a weapon to unbind India from the rule of the British. Sri Satguru Ji believed that political freedom was part of religion. Strategies like boycotting government services, educational services of the british, boycotting foreign made goods and further were embraced in Sri Satguru Ji’s non co-operation movement. Many Namdhari Sikhs have kept unbreakable faith in Sri Satguruji, felt and known that He’s an Avtaar of the Almighty. Thus, each and every hukam(order) of Sri Satguru Ji has always been a life order for them. For instance, if they failed after undertaking any task they received hukam for, they would find it difficult to even face themselves in shame and would step forward to anything for atonement.
Since the British couldn’t halt the surprisingly overpowering Namdhari Sikhs, they murdered or imprisoned many who they found doing Nitnem(chanting the Lord’s name) and reciting the holy verses from the Granths. They also took Sri Satguruji under their custody and travelled to Rangoon for his exile on baseless accusations. Namdhari Sikhs became shaheeds(matyrs) in order to protect people and religion.
There is a sakhi, which describes the power and faith of the Namdhari people in Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, where the incident happened a long while before Sri Satguru Ji was held captive. The sakhi tells us that one day Sri Satguru Ji was walking around in the village with one of his Sikhs, and they met a lady who presented His Holiness with a black shawl (in spite of the fact that Sri Satguru Ji didn’t allow the usage of colors such as blue and black in any item) and when He accepted it, He told that lady that she had given him the symbol of Him going to the foreign lands(pardes). However, the Sikh understood what Satguru Ji was talking about and that Sikh was ordered by Sri Satguru Ji not to reveal that matter to anyone.
Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji exiled to Burma from Calcutta Port in March 1872, and before He left He informed the Sikhs that He will come “the day after tomorrow”. In those days, the measurement of time was done in a different way compared to today, each unit then are a lot more units of measurement today for example one “Ghari” then is similar to two and half days today. We all know that the life span of Satguru Ram Singh Ji is said to be around two hundred and fifty years and in this year 2010 we celebrate Satguru Ji’s 195th Prakaash Diwas (birthday).
We all know that Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji will return one day and give us His divine darshan, but when will He? -That can’t be stated but simply predicted. However, in both Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji’s and Satguru Pratap Singh Ji’s pavittar updesh, it is said that if a Namdhari doesn’t believe that Satguru Ram Singh Ji’s going to return then that person has no rights to call himself a Namdhari. Every year the annual Jap prayog is held where the Namdhari Sadh Sangat gather and do Naam Simran continuously so that they receive Darshan (blessed vision) of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji. Lots of verses are read from the holy Granths daily, awaiting his return.
When Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji returns on his white horse, that is said to be the end of Kalyug. The verses from the Sri Dasam Granth Sahib which was written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji says that the almighty will incarnate himself for the protection of the poor (Gareeb Nivaj) and then the era of Satyug (Golden Age) shall begin. We could also say that the Almighty’s incarnation will be called as the Kalki Avtaar. According to the Sri Dasam Granth, the Kalki Avtaar, or for us our Satguru Ram Singh Ji will return when the following description will be taking place on this earth (translated from the Sri Dasam Granth itself):
- When the earth is pushed downwards by the weight of sins and the sufferings become unbearable, all types of crimes are committed; the mother sleeps in the same bed with her son. The daughter unhesitatingly will have illicit relations with her father. The sister embraces her brother. The brother takes pleasure with the sister and the wife is discarded. The people will lose all moral and ethical values and no one will recognise each other. The beautiful women will indulge in adultery and forget the real family love and the traditions of religion.
- In every home false hood will prevail and the truth will be eclipsed. The truth will not be found, even if one searches for it, the minds of people will be absorbed in the falsehood. Nobody will talk of Shastras and Smritis.
- There will be no true Hindu or a true Muslim. There will be diverse thinking in every home. No one will follow the established path of religion but will oppose each other. The earth will be pressured under the weight of wrong doings and nobody will abide by the religious tents. Every home will have a separate belief. Nobody will follow one religion. The subjects will become hybrid and no one will remain high cast in the whole world but will do such things that they all become lowly.
- All will proclaim themselves as Lords. Youngsters will not respect the elders. In every home such people will take birth who will declare themselves as Ram. No one will even by mistake read Puranas and no one will hold the Quran in their hands. The one who will hold Vedas in his hands, will be killed by burning him in the fire of cow dung.
- The story of sin will be prevalent everywhere in the whole world and the Dharma will flee from the hearts of the people. Every home will have different belief of its own.
- The valuable caste system will disappear and will discard the old rich culture of the society.
- The people will not follow any of the religion. There will be disobedience to the Scriptures of Hinduism, various religions will be prevalent in different homes and no one will follow the established path of religion
Looking at the above description we all can see that all of this is ALREADY EXISTING in this world today. We will all soon get to witness the end of the Kalyug era and that’s not going to be something pleasant. Instead, it’s going to be a very terrifying time. We get to hear in Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji’s updesh again and again that in the past end of Kalyug was said to work similar to a chakki (small wheat grinder), where the evil would be grinded to death and those protected by the Almighty would be untouched at the corners. However, the present situation is far worse and is now matched with a Kraas (Large wheat grinder) which is relatively gigantic causing the wheat to be grinded mercilessly and the ones protected by Sri Satguruji to be positioned in the center, unharmed.
In Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji’s bachan, Satguru Ji had said that Satguru Ji himself will be around 92 years old when Satguru Ram Singh Ji will return and as we all know, at the end of last year we celebrated Satguru Ji’s 90th Prakaash Diwas(birthday). Therefore, the time is really very near; just around two years away, estimating to the year 2012, when the whole world shall see major changes. What is happening around the globe now also indicates some signs of future terror. The frequency and consequences of natural disasters such as earthquakes, enormous volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, global warming and other calamities also all might symbolize as to where the world is heading towards. However, incidents in this world only take place if Sri Satguru Ji himself wishes that they do, and so the return of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji could be before or after the estimated time as it all depends on Satguru Ji’s wishes. Therefore, dear readers, we should all do one hour of Nitnem everyday so that when our time comes we’ll have Satguru Ji protecting us from the fire which could totally destroy us. We might not wish to pay too much attention to this as our worldly matters may seem more important to us. But the truth is, when we reach the moment the effects of Kalyug affect us, by being unprepared we could end up in the worst shape ever imaginable. Now is the time when we have got opportunities to earn the good and repent for our sins. The holy verses from the Sri Adi Granth Sahib say “ਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਓਹੁ ਆਵੈ ਤਾ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਅਉਗਣ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਇਆ”which translates as “If a person should come again to the Sanctuary of the Guru, then even his/her past sins shall be forgiven”. Satguru Ji is very merciful and he forever protects his devotees, but it’s also our responsibility to follow his path of Truth so that we are blessed in this world and as well as the worlds after.
